What is Purr Machine?
Purr Machine simulates the physical comfort of a cat purring on your chest. Three buttons play recordings of three real cats — Floozy, Nacho, and No-No! — paired with haptic patterns on the iPhone's Taptic engine.
Getting Started
Place the phone on your chest. Tap any of the three kitten names. The app plays that cat's recording and drives a synchronized haptic. Tap the same name again to stop, or tap a different name to switch cats.
The Three Cats
Each cat has their own distinct purr, breath rhythm, and heart rate, drawn from their actual recording. Floozy was a long-haired tortoiseshell with striking green eyes. Nacho is a sleek orange tabby with a small white tag. No-No! was a grey tabby who wore a pearl necklace.
Sleep Timer
Tap the bottom button (∞ by default) to cycle between 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, and infinite. When the selected time runs out, audio and haptics stop together.
Lock Screen
When the screen locks, the audio continues so you can fall asleep listening. iOS does not permit custom haptics with the screen locked — the haptic stops on lock and resumes the instant you unlock and look at the phone.
Troubleshooting
- Volume seems low: check that the side mute switch isn't engaged, and use the volume buttons during playback.
- Haptics aren't felt: the iPhone's Taptic engine requires iPhone 8 or later. Confirm that Settings → Sounds & Haptics → System Haptics is on.
- Haptics don't resume after unlock: they should be automatic. If they don't, tap the kitten name to restart playback.
- The loop is audible: the seam between loop iterations is processed to be inaudible, but very quiet rooms can reveal it. Try a slightly louder volume.
